Pearls are globular cysts of a type of calcium mineral carbonate (mainly aragonite or an assortment of aragonite and calcite), that form within the tissue of molluscs as a defensive covering (known as nacre) as the consequence of an internal discomfort, like a grain of fine sand for example.

Most pearls available today don’t occur normally by natural means but are man-made or cultured by placing an unnatural irritant in to the mollusc shell to produce the pearl.

Cultured pearls and natural pearls can be recognised from imitation pearls by a simple test. Take the pearl and rub it (softly!) up against the edge of your an teeth. Cultured and natural pearls will feel somewhat tough, like fine sandpaper, due to the surface of natural nacre. Imitations will feel as soft as a wine glass because the top is moulded or coated on an even bead.

Cultured pearls come in many designs and colours. Pearls are usually a smooth iridescent white with suggestions of green or greyish, or iridescent dark-coloured with shades of light blue or violet. Cultured pearls have the same therapeutic attributes as the natural pearl.
